The Minister of Culture and the Arts, T.B. Ekanayake has condemned the wedding ceremony of six canine couples which were conducted in a “traditional” manner by the Kandy Police Kennels.
The Minister has also requested the Inspector General of Police to conduct an immediate inquiry regarding the ceremony, which he claims is damaging to the country’s culture.
The Kandy Police Kennels yesterday (26) organized a wedding ceremony for six canine couples, serving under the police department.
The event, which took place at Asgiriya Ground in Kandy, is the first such ceremony conducted by the Police Department.
Police Spokesman SP Buddhika Siriwardena, when inquired by Ada Derana regarding the allegation, said yesterday’s event was the commencing of a new programme to breed police dogs within the country and thereby cut down on the cost of purchasing them from foreign nations.
He stated that the Police Department had no intention of causing any insult to Sri Lankan culture.
The certificates provided to the dos at the ceremony were only certificated issued by the veterinary doctor certifying that the dogs were suitable for breeding.
