Nine suspects including interdicted DIG Vaas Gunawardena and his son Ravindu, who have been identified as suspects in the murder of businessman Mohamed Siyam, have been further remanded till September 10 by the Colombo Magistrate’s Court.

ASP Shani Abeysekara of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), filing a ‘B Repot’ to court today, stated that the investigations into the murder requires the searching of data contained in the personal computer of the 8th suspect.

Therefore he requested that a court order be issued for the data in the computer to be inspected by the head of the University of Colombo, School of Computing and a report submitted to court.

The Colombo Additional Magistrate G.L. Priyantha issued a directive to the Colombo University regarding the matter, before further remanding all suspects till September 10.

Bambalapitiya-based businessman Mohamed Siyam was abducted and murdered in the Dompe area on May 22.

Following investigations conducted into the incident, the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) on June 06 arrested Sub-Inspector Lakmini Bamunusinghe, attached to the office of the DIG Western Province (North), along with three Police Constables (PCs) serving in the DIG’s special unit.
 
Upon interrogating the arrested police officers, the CID uncovered information regarding the former DIG’s alleged involvement in the businessman’s murder and recorded a statement from Vaas Gunawardena on the same day.

He was arrested by the CID on June 10 and remanded by the Colombo Additional Magistrate. He was interdicted by the police on June 18.
