Opposition Leader Ranil Wickramasinghe urged the people in the North to not give any “oxygen” to the ruling government, at a time when the people are prepared to take to the streets to chase away the Rajapaksa government from the South.
People in the North should be able to exercise their franchise without any influences, he said, addressing a public meeting at Nallur Sangiliyan Grounds in Jaffna yesterday (10).
Wickramasinghe stated that the people in the Northern Province had supported him in the 2005 Presidential Election while the people of the Eastern Province had not. Had they too supported me the people in the East would have not suffered, he said.
The UNP leader said he does not wish to see the people in the North living on the knees under the Rajapaksa regime and that they should live freely.
He stated that only the United National Party (UNP) is able to unite all communities in the country to live in harmony.
He said that although the government now boasts of development in the North, the youth in the province are unemployed and a military rule has been launched.
Wickramasinghe stated that the UNP has solutions to all the issues faced by the Tamil people and that his party is able to solve the racism in the South and the national issue in the North.
