Voter turnout as of noon today has been the highest in the Central Province so far after ballotting began to elect members of three provincial councils, including the war-affected Northern Province.
The highest voter turnout for the Central Provincial has been recorded in the Kandy District with a 42% voter turnout while both Matale and Nuwara Elya Districts have recorded a voter turnout of 35% by 12 noon.
However, voters in Sri Lanka’s north too appeared to have thronged polling stations as the voter turnout between 7am and 12 noon in Kilinochchi (29%), Vavuniya (24%) and Mannar (30%) district showed much promise.
The turnout in the Mullaitivu District was around 50%, according to the Mullaitivu District Secretary.
The provincial council election is the first in 25 years in the North, once the heartland of Tamil Tiger separatists, where long queues of patient voters formed in the morning at polling stations.
Meanwhile figures in the North Western Province show a voter turnout of 27% in the Kurunegala District and 20% in the Puttlam District.
