Fake Rs.2,000 notes circulates around country - Police

Police today urged the public to be extra cautious regarding the serial number when exchanging Rs 2,000 currency notes, following the recent discovery of a large haul of counterfeit money.

The Police Spokesman SSP Ajith Rohana stated that they have received information that fake two thousand rupee notes, similar to those found at a press in Malabe, are circulating around the island.

These fake notes have been found in Beruwala, Yakkalamulla, Ja-Ela and Pullam areas and reported to the respective police stations.

The notes were detected recently by banks in Beruwala and Ja-Ela and a store in Yakkalamulla, police said, adding, that one counterfeit Rs 2,000 note was discovered yesterday during the daily bank depositing of Puttalam Court.

Therefore the police spokesman urged the public to pay more attention to the serial number of Rs 2,000 notes.

The Criminal Investigation Department on October 28 raided a counterfeit money printing press in Malabe and seized Rs. 7 million in fake notes of the Rs. 2000 denomination.

All the fake Rs. 2000 notes were printed with the same serial number P 67799159.

The Police Spokesman therefore requested the public to report Rs 2,000 notes with the aforementioned serial number to the nearest police station.
