Six suspects, including two women, have been arrested with a stock of over 100 grams of heroin while allegedly engaging in heroin trafficking and packaging from a rented house in Halpita, Polgasowita.
The raid was carried out based on confidential information received by the Officer-in-Charge of the Kesbewa Police Station.
Police seized 112 grams of heroin, an electronic scale and a stock of small paper packets bearing an emblem, allegedly used for packaging the narcotics.
According to the police, a married couple is among those arrested.
One of the suspects is also said to be a key suspect in an incident reported several months ago in which a woman sustained serious injuries after a group broke into a house in the Boralesgamuwa area.
In addition, another suspect has pending court cases over theft, robbery and drug-related offences, while the other suspects are also reported to have faced various criminal charges, police revealed.
During questioning, the main suspect had reportedly disclosed that the stock of narcotics belonged to an organized criminal and drug trafficker known as ‘Bodhiwatte Avishka’.
The group had allegedly maintained a distribution network to deliver narcotics to various locations based on instructions given by the alleged drug kingpin via phone calls.
The arrested suspects are due to be produced before the Kesbewa Magistrate’s Court, where police are expected to seek detention orders.
Kesbewa Police are conducting further investigations into the incident.
