A large consignment of the narcotic substance heroin weighing over 100 kilograms was seized from the Kapparathota Beach in Weligama this morning (15), following information received by five suspects arrested by the Sri Lanka Navy.
The seizure was made during a coordinated operation involving the Sri Lanka Navy, Police and other security agencies.
According to the Sri Lanka Navy, the Police Special Task Force (STF) recovered 120 packets concealed inside six sacks, along with two satellite phones and an internet connectivity device concealed at Kapparathota Beach.
Accordingly, the operation was launched based on credible information revealed by five suspects arrested by the Navy during a search operation conducted on October 13, 2026, off Dondra, in the southern seas.
During the operation, the Navy had seized a suspicious local multi-day fishing trawler and apprehended the five suspects.
The subsequent coordinated operation involved the Navy, State Intelligence Service, Police, STF, Police Narcotic Bureau (PNB) and Sri Lanka Coast Guard.
Meanwhile, the five suspects arrested by the Navy have been handed over to the PNB for further legal proceedings.
The Sri Lanka Navy stated that it remains committed to conducting anti-narcotics operations across the country's coastal areas under the national initiative ‘A Nation United’, with the support of the public and fishing community.
