The Department of Irrigation has issued a warning of possible minor flooding in the low-lying areas of the Nilwala River basin within the next 24 hours.
The warning applies to low-lying areas within the Nilwala River floodplain in the Akuressa, Athuraliya, Malimbada, Kamburupitiya, Thihagoda and Matara Divisional Secretariat Divisions.
The warning was issued following significant rainfall in the upper and middle catchment areas of the Nilwala River and an analysis of water levels recorded at river gauges.
The Department of Irrigation has urged residents in the affected areas, as well as motorists travelling through them, to remain vigilant.
Disaster management authorities have also been informed to take the necessary precautionary measures.
The warning remains in effect until 6.00 p.m. on October 16, 2026.
