The Hambantota International Port Group (HIPG) states that 167,569 vehicles were transshipped and handled through the Hambantota International Port between March 2025 and September 2026.
Accordingly, 86,389 vehicles were handled between March and December 2025, including 30,809 brand-new vehicles and 55,580 used vehicles.
A further 81,180 vehicles were handled up to September 2026, comprising 25,018 brand-new vehicles and 56,162 used vehicles.
HIPG stated that it had taken measures to provide the necessary support to importers amid the surge in vehicle demand and various logistical disruptions affecting vehicle transportation.
Meanwhile, the Vehicle Importers Association of Sri Lanka (VIASL) has commended HIPG for its responsiveness, operational flexibility, and practical support.
Representing more than 450 members, the association includes large enterprises as well as micro, small, and medium-sized vehicle importers.
During the period when vehicle import restrictions were in place, HIPG also introduced demurrage fee waivers and other concessions for vehicles held at the port for extended periods.
According to a statement issued by HIPG, these measures were taken to facilitate vehicle clearance and minimize the financial impact on importers.
Furthermore, a scheme to cap storage fees was recently introduced for vehicles affected by disruptions to vehicle transshipment routes through the Gulf region.
Wilson Qu, Chief Executive Officer of HIPG, stated that responding to increased demand requires not only sufficient port-handling capacity but also an understanding of customers’ operational needs and the ability to adapt to changing circumstances.
