A group of Buddhist monks staging a satyagraha at Viharamahadevi Park in Colombo, demanding the release of Venerable Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thero, continues to remain at the site.
The monks arrived at Viharamahadevi Park last afternoon, and a tense situation arose between them and the police when the group attempted to erect a hut during the night.
However, Venerable Thiththagalle Anandasiri Thero stated that the monks would not leave the premises until Venerable Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thero is released.
The group of monks, who had gathered in front of the Presidential Secretariat until last evening (16), subsequently marched to the Ministry of Buddhasasana.
Claiming that discussions with the Ministry Secretary had been unsuccessful, the monks then proceeded to Viharamahadevi Park.
The protest march, titled “Nidahase Paada Yaathraa” (March for Freedom), was launched by a group of Buddhist monks on October 10 from the premises of the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic in Kandy. Led by the Maha Sangha and demanding the release of Venerable Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thero, the march reached Colombo on October 16.
