It has been reported that all three power generation units at the Lakvijaya Power Plant in Norochcholai have temporarily shut down following the islandwide power outage this morning (17).
According to the National System Operator (NSO), the nationwide power outage occurred due to instability in the transmission network.
Meanwhile, the Energy Minister Anura Karunathilake said efforts were underway to restore the power system, with electricity expected to be restored in stages as soon as possible. He added that power had already been restored in several areas.
The Minister said the exact cause of the islandwide power interruption had yet to be identified. Investigations are underway, with particular attention being paid to whether an operational failure at a power plant in Kotmale yesterday (16) had contributed to the system imbalance.
He also urged consumers with rooftop solar panel systems to disconnect them temporarily to assist in restoring the power grid as quickly as possible.
