A Satyagraha launched by a group of Buddhist monks at Viharamahadevi Park in Colombo, calling for the release of Venerable Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thera, is continuing for the fourth consecutive day today (19).
The protest was launched on the afternoon of October 16, when the monks arrived at Viharamahadevi Park. A tense situation developed between the monks and the police on the same day when the protesters attempted to erect a canopy at the site.
The monks participating in the Satyagraha have stated that they will not leave the park until Venerable Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thera is released.
On October 16, the group had initially gathered outside the Presidential Secretariat before proceeding to the Ministry of Buddhasasana, where they held discussions with the Ministry Secretary.
However, describing the discussions as unsuccessful, the monks later announced that they would continue their protest at Viharamahadevi Park until a solution was provided to their demands.
