A joint search operation by the Sri Lanka Army and wildlife officers to locate the tusker ‘Agbo’ is underway for the second consecutive day today (19).
The operation commenced at around 7.15 a.m. today in the Nachchaduwa reservoir, with the participation of 50 Army personnel.
The search is being conducted under the leadership of four officers from the 21 Infantry Division. Officers including Major General Kaminda Silva, Brigadier Basnayake and Major Silva are also participating in the operation.
Based on information that Agbo had travelled from the Eruwewa area along the A-9 road towards the Nachchaduwa reservoir yesterday (18), search teams are focusing on the reserve today.
A Sri Lanka Army drone and two Sri Lanka Air Force drones are also scheduled to be deployed in the operation.
However, wildlife officials believe that a closer inspection of the elephant will help determine whether it has sustained any injuries.
Meanwhile, a special team led by Buddhika Athukorala, Range Assistant at the Thirappane Wildlife Beat Office, is also providing guidance for the search operation.
