The United National Party (UNP) has criticised the present government over its alleged failure to provide diplomatic courtesies and security to Deputy Prime Minister of Thailand Suphajee Suthumpun during her recent visit to Sri Lanka, describing the incident as evidence of the government’s immature foreign policy.
In a statement, the UNP said Deputy Prime Minister Suthumpun attended the ceremony to unveil the pinnacle of the Mihindu Maha Seya in Mihintale as the chief guest in her capacity as Thailand’s Deputy Prime Minister. The party noted that the ceremony was an important event in Sri Lanka’s Buddhist religious calendar.
The UNP said it was customary for foreign leaders visiting Sri Lanka, whether on official or private visits, to receive appropriate diplomatic courtesies and security arrangements.
Citing a previous example, the party said special security had been provided by the government of the time when former British Prime Minister David Cameron visited Sri Lanka on a private trip, despite no longer holding office.
The statement described Thailand as a longstanding friendly nation that has maintained close ties with Sri Lanka for centuries.
The UNP also called on the Minister of Buddhasasana and Religious Affairs to immediately explain why Deputy Prime Minister Suthumpun had allegedly been treated in such a manner, particularly given Thailand’s role in bringing the sacred pinnacle and ‘Chuda Manikya’ to Sri Lanka for the religious event.
The party characterised the alleged treatment of the Thai Deputy Prime Minister as dismissive and said the government should clarify the circumstances surrounding the matter.
