Sri Lanka Customs officers have seized a consignment of narcotics worth more than Rs. 67.53 million during a special operation conducted at the Colombo Central Mail Exchange.
The drugs were discovered concealed in 11 suspicious international mail parcels sent from eight countries, including Thailand, the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Belgium, France, the Netherlands and Germany.
According to reports, Customs Narcotics Control Unit officers identified the suspicious parcels over the past several months while inspecting incoming international mail. The parcels were held pending collection by their intended recipients.
However, after no one came forward to claim the parcels within the stipulated period, officials decided to open and inspect them in the presence of officers from the Police Narcotics Bureau.
A joint team from Sri Lanka Customs and the Police Narcotics Bureau conducted a detailed examination of all 11 parcels earlier today.
The operation uncovered more than 3.1 kilograms of Kush cannabis, with an estimated market value exceeding Rs. 30.5 million, in parcels originating from Thailand, the United States and the United Kingdom.
Officers also seized 2,395 grams of MDMA tablets from parcels sent from Belgium, France, Canada and Germany. A further 33 grams of a drug known as “Mandy” were found in a parcel originating from the Netherlands.
The largest individual seizure was reportedly an MDMA consignment discovered in a parcel sent from Belgium, with an estimated value of approximately Rs. 33.03 million. The weight of this consignment was unclear in the original report.
Following preliminary investigations at the Central Mail Exchange, Customs officers handed over the seized narcotics to the Police Narcotics Bureau for further investigations and legal action through the courts.
