The Cabinet of Ministers has approved amendments to the Suraksha Student Insurance Scheme, introducing additional benefits for medical treatments, diagnostic tests and accident-related deaths, effective from September 1, 2026, to August 31, 2027.
The scheme aims to ensure that students facing educational disruptions due to health issues can overcome such challenges and continue their education without interruption.
Students attending government schools, government-approved private schools, Pirivenas and assisted special schools are eligible for benefits under the programme.
The revised benefits were proposed through amendments to the existing agreement between the Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education and Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation General Limited. The Prime Minister, in her capacity as the Minister of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education, informed the Cabinet of the proposed changes, which received Cabinet approval.
Under the revised scheme, students will be eligible for benefits of up to Rs. 75,000 for repairs to hearing accessories and related service charges.
Students requiring long-term medication for chronic kidney disease and chronic inflammatory arthritis will also be eligible for benefits of up to Rs. 20,000.
Additionally, benefits of up to Rs. 20,000 will be provided to cover screening tests for skin cancer, post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder (PTLD), osteoporosis, hepatitis B, hepatitis C and HIV.
The existing critical illness category will also be revised by expanding the coverage from “Cancer Treatment” to “Cancer Treatment and Related Testing.”
Expenses incurred for major hip, shoulder and knee joint replacement surgeries required due to accidents, as well as PET scans, will also be covered under the critical illness category.
Meanwhile, a benefit of Rs. 100,000 will be provided in the event of a student's accidental death during educational activities organised by institutions under the Ministry and conducted under the supervision of education authorities.
The coverage will apply to activities held both within and outside school premises, including educational excursions and sports meets, according to the Cabinet paper presented by the Minister of Education.
The amendments are intended to strengthen the financial protection available to students and their families by expanding insurance coverage for medical conditions, diagnostic procedures and accidents.
