Several gunshots have reportedly been fired into the air at the Kalutara Prison this afternoon (21) after a person attempted to throw several parcels into the prison premises from outside.

Prison officers stationed in the security towers reportedly had instructed the individual to leave the area.

However, as the individual threw the parcels into the prison, the officers had fired warning shots into the air.

Prison sources said that two of the parcels thrown by the individual had landed inside the prison premises.

The individual had fled the scene following the shooting, and an investigation into the incident has been launched.

Meanwhile, it is reported that narcotics and cannabis have been found inside the parcels recovered from within the prison.
