The 69th World Congress of the International Police Association (IPA) commenced today (21) at Cinnamon Lakeside Colombo, with Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism Vijitha Herath attending as the Chief Guest.

Held from 20 to 25 October 2026, the Congress brings together more than 400 delegates representing 69 countries. This is the first time an IPA World Congress is being held in an Asian country, marking an important occasion for Sri Lanka to promote international relations and cultural exchange, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism said in a statement.

With more than 600,000 members worldwide, the International Police Association is a non-governmental organisation that promotes social, cultural and professional friendship among serving and retired police officers.

Guided by its motto, “Servo per Amikeco”, meaning “Service Through Friendship”, the Association works to strengthen mutual understanding, cooperation and friendship among police officers around the world.

The current World President of the International Police Association is Martin Hoffmann, while the Sri Lanka Section is headed by Inspector General of Police, Attorney-at-Law Priyantha Weerasuriya, the statement said.

Following the Congress, the IPA Friendship Week will take place from 25 to 31 October as a tour programme across Sri Lanka, giving delegates the opportunity to experience the country's rich cultural heritage, ancient cities, historical sites, diverse natural landscapes, local cuisine and traditions.

Addressing the gathering, Minister Vijitha Herath warmly welcomed the international delegates to Sri Lanka on behalf of the Government and the people, highlighting the importance of international cooperation in addressing cross-border crime, organised criminal networks and emerging challenges in law enforcement.

He also invited the delegates to enjoy their stay while experiencing Sri Lanka’s natural beauty, rich cultural heritage, renowned hospitality and local traditions, the Ministry added.
