A 65-year-old woman has been killed in a road accident on the Southern Expressway last evening (21), after a van travelling towards Mattala collided with the rear of a lorry travelling in the same direction.
The accident occurred near the 93.6 km marker of the expressway, police stated. Preliminary reports indicate that the van driver had fallen asleep at the wheel, causing the vehicle to crash into the lorry.
The van driver and his mother, who was seated in the front passenger seat, sustained serious injuries and were admitted to the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital. The woman later succumbed to her injuries while receiving treatment.
The deceased was a resident of Kataragama.
Further investigations into the accident are being conducted by the Pinnaduwa Expressway Police Post.
