Eight of the 30 spill gates at the Rajanganaya Reservoir have been opened due to the prevailing heavy rainfall.
Accordingly, water is being released into the Kala Oya at a rate of 7,884 cubic feet per second.
Meanwhile, one spill gate of the Upper Kotmale Reservoir remains open due to continued rainfall in its catchment areas, reservoir engineers said.
Two spill gates had been open until this morning (22) following heavy rainfall in the catchment areas yesterday. However, one of the gates closed automatically in the early hours of today (22), the engineers said.
They further warned that the reservoir’s remaining spill gates could open automatically if heavy rainfall continues in the catchment areas.
Accordingly, residents living on both sides of the Kotmale Oya downstream of the reservoir dam have been urged to remain vigilant.
