The Most Venerable Akuressē Siri Dhammavimala Thera has been appointed as the new Chief Incumbent of the Gatambe Rajopawanaramaya Temple.
The appointment follows the passing away of the historic temple’s former Chief Incumbent, the Most Venerable Keppitiyagoda Siriwimala Thera, who also served as the Anunayaka of the Sri Lanka Ramanna Maha Nikaya.
The Thera passed away on October 18 at the age of 96 while receiving treatment at a private hospital in Kandy, following a prolonged illness.
The late Ven. Siriwimala Thera rendered a significant service to the Buddhist revival and cultural advancement of Sri Lanka, with Getambe Rajopawanaramaya serving as the center of his activities.
He was also widely respected for his fearless voice in defending the country and religion on various occasions of national and religious importance.
The cremation ceremony of the late Thera was held with state patronage at the Getambe Grounds yesterday (21).
