Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya stated that a formal procedure is being developed not only to improve infrastructure in schools but also to recruit qualified and skilled personnel into the education system.
The Prime Minister, who is also the Minister of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education, made these remarks while participating in the ceremony to hand over the newly constructed two-storey building at Kadawalawawa Maha Vidyalaya to students today (24).
The Government has invested approximately Rs. 55 million in the construction of this building, which comprises eight primary classrooms. Following the opening ceremony, attended by the Prime Minister, she engaged in a cordial conversation with students and visited the classrooms.
Addressing the occasion, the Prime Minister stated:
“The primary objective of the education reforms we are implementing from this year is to nurture citizens equipped with knowledge, skills and values.
Until now, our education system has only placed emphasis on imparting knowledge to children and preparing them for examinations. However, what we want is to nurture a generation of children who can apply the knowledge they acquire in practical situations, solve problems in society and create innovations.
In order to achieve this, we are implementing a range of initiatives, including the introduction of new curricula, teacher training and the development of school infrastructure. We also expect to make an investment in transforming education in 2027.
We are also working to further strengthen the education system by resuming teacher and principal recruitment, which had been delayed for many years, while giving priority to skills and competencies.
The greatest hope of parents is to provide their children with a good education and enable them to progress further than they themselves have. Therefore, while easing the burden borne by parents in providing their children with an education, the Government must also take responsibility for a share of that commitment.
Our children possess talents and abilities. Our aim is to provide them with the opportunities they need to develop these talents and contribute to the future development of the country. It is with this objective that we are implementing these education reforms.”
