The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) has warned that dengue cases could rise again amid prevailing rainy weather conditions.

Speaking at a press conference today (26), Dr. Chamil Wijesinghe of the association stressed the need to take preventive measures to curb a potential resurgence of dengue.

Noting that intermittent rainfall has been experienced since the beginning of this month, he said the prevailing conditions could lead to an increase in dengue cases. He added that entomological data had also indicated a rise in mosquito and mosquito larval densities.

Dr. Wijesinghe emphasised the importance of cleaning homes, workplaces and other premises, stating that such measures are essential for the long-term control and eradication of dengue.

He further noted that the commencement of the North-East monsoon during October and November could contribute to a rapid increase in dengue cases, particularly in the Eastern, Northern and North Central provinces, which are affected by the monsoon.

“Given the prevailing weather conditions, the likelihood of an increase in dengue cases is higher than usual. We repeatedly emphasise that when dengue cases rise, we should not focus solely on the number of patients or deaths. Instead, we should dedicate even a day or two to cleaning our homes and workplaces. We must work towards the long-term control and eradication of dengue,” he added.
