An increase in road accidents has been observed in recent days, with the police paying special attention to serious accidents occurring amid the prevailing adverse weather conditions, Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of Traffic Control and Road Safety W.P.J. Senadheera stated.
Speaking at a media briefing held today (26), DIG Senadheera noted that the risk of road accidents increases not only during heavy rains but also under dark and gloomy weather conditions before the rain begins.
He said adverse weather and poor lighting reduce visibility on roads, making it difficult for drivers to clearly identify oncoming vehicles and obstacles on the road.
Therefore, the DIG urged all drivers, including those using expressways, to avoid driving at excessive speeds during adverse weather conditions.
DIG Senadheera further emphasized that drivers should maintain a safe speed at which they can easily control their vehicles in an emergency. He also stressed that all passengers travelling on expressways and other roads must wear seat belts properly.
He also highlighted the importance of motorcyclists wearing protective helmets, using safety equipment that improves visibility at night and during dark weather conditions, and maintaining an appropriate distance from other vehicles.
As excessive speed, poor visibility, and failure to recognize road hazards caused by rain can lead to serious accidents, the Deputy Inspector General of Police urged all drivers to exercise greater caution, drive safely, and comply with road traffic regulations.
