The Department of Irrigation has warned of a risk of minor flooding in low-lying areas of the Gin Ganga Valley within the next 24 hours following significant heavy rainfall across the river basin’s catchment areas.
According to the department, the warning is based on prevailing rainfall conditions and an analysis of water levels recorded at gauging stations maintained by the Department of Irrigation within the Gin Ganga Basin.
The areas at risk fall within the Thawalama, Nagoda, Baddegama and Welivitiya-Divithura Divisional Secretariat divisions.
The Irrigation Department has urged residents in the affected areas and motorists travelling through these locations to exercise extreme caution in view of the potential flooding.
