The Irrigation Department has extended its flood warning for the Kalu Ganga Basin by another 24 hours, till 11:30 a.m. tomorrow (28).
According to the Irrigation Department, heavy rainfall is persisting across the catchment areas of the basin. Data compiled from river gauging stations managed by the department indicates that rising water levels could trigger a minor flood situation in the low-lying areas of the Kalu Ganga floodplain within the next 24 hours.
Accordingly, residents and commuters across several Divisional Secretariat Divisions in the Ratnapura and Kalutara districts have been urged to remain on high alert:
Ratnapura District: Pelmadulla, Nivithigala, Ratnapura, Kuruwita, Ayagama, and Elapatha.
Kalutara District: Ingiriya, Horana, Dodangoda, Millaniya, Bulathsinhala, Madurawala, and Palindanuwara.
The Disaster Management authorities and the Irrigation Department have also requested motorists navigating roads passing through the hazard zones—particularly smaller by-roads prone to sudden water logging—to exercise extreme care.
Relevant disaster management units have been mobilized to take all necessary precautionary measures to respond to potential emergency situations as the weather system continues to evolve. Residents living near the river banks are advised to monitor local weather bulletins and safeguard essential property, according to the statement issued by the Irrigation Department.
