Sri Lanka won the toss and elected to field first against England in the sixth match of the Pakistan ODI Tri-Series at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore.
The encounter is the final league-stage fixture for both teams, with Sri Lanka having already secured a place in the tournament final against hosts Pakistan, scheduled for October 31. England, meanwhile, have been eliminated from contention following three consecutive defeats.
Sri Lanka head into the contest on the back of an emphatic eight-wicket victory over Pakistan on Tuesday. Left-arm fast bowler Dilshan Madushanka delivered a career-best performance, claiming five wickets for 34 runs as Pakistan were dismissed for 110. Sri Lanka then reached the target comfortably, winning with eight wickets in hand.
The result continued Sri Lanka’s impressive run in the tournament and secured their place in the final, giving the team another opportunity to assess its combinations ahead of the title decider.
England, captained by Harry Brook, will be looking to finish their campaign on a positive note after a series of disappointing results despite producing some outstanding individual performances.
Their earlier meeting with Sri Lanka in Rawalpindi produced one of the most remarkable matches of the tournament. England posted a formidable 429 for four, powered by Brook’s record-breaking 202 off 116 balls, but Sri Lanka pulled off a stunning two-wicket victory by reaching 430 in 49.5 overs. Pavan Rathnayake scored 130, while Avishka Fernando and Dasun Shanaka both made 97.
England also suffered a narrow one-wicket defeat against Pakistan in Lahore, despite Ben Duckett’s century, as Shadab Khan’s unbeaten 113 guided the hosts to victory.
The tournament features Sri Lanka, England and Pakistan, with the final scheduled to take place at Gaddafi Stadium on Saturday, October 31.
