The Department of Meteorology has warned of showers and thundershowers across several parts of the island today (30), with heavy rainfall expected in a number of areas.

Several spells of showers are expected in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in the Galle and Matara districts. A few showers may also occur in the North-Western Province, the Met. Department stated.

Meanwhile, residents in the Central, Uva and Eastern provinces, along with the Polonnaruwa and Hambantota districts, can expect showers or thundershowers after 1.00 p.m.

The Department also warned that fairly heavy rainfall exceeding 50 mm is likely at some locations in these areas.

However, mainly fair weather is expected to prevail across the rest of the island.

The general public has been urged to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions against possible damage caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Misty conditions are also expected in some parts of the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces during the early hours of the morning.
