The Federation of University Teachers’ Associations (FUTA) is scheduled to launch a one-day island-wide strike today (30), demanding solutions to several pressing issues affecting the state university system.

FUTA General Secretary, Senior Lecturer Charudaththe Illangasinghe, said the trade union action would be carried out across all state universities.

The strike comes amid growing concerns over the shortage of academic staff, excessive workloads placed on existing university employees and inadequate physical facilities.

Illangasinghe said FUTA had also organised a protest march today in parallel with the strike.

He added that the action was aimed at drawing public attention to the challenges facing the state university system and urging authorities to address the concerns raised by university academics.
