Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa has taken steps to create a life-size statue of the late tusker ‘Kawanthissa’ and launch a wildlife elephant conservation programme.
The project is scheduled to be established on the premises of a property belonging to former President R. Premadasa, located in the area of Ambanpola.
The property is located in close proximity to the area frequently visited by the Kahalla-Pallekele elephant herd, which was once led by the late tusker Kawanthissa.
The designated premises will feature a life-size statue of Kawanthissa, along with research facilities and a library.
The center aims to promote research on wild elephants, take practical measures to mitigate the human-elephant conflict in the country, and conserve elephants for the benefit of present and future generations of Sri Lankans.
The entire project will be implemented by the ‘Kawanthissa Elephant Protection Task Force’, headed by Sajith Premadasa.
Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa has extended an open invitation to all environmentalists, stakeholders and members of the public who care about Kawanthissa and Sri Lanka’s elephant population to join this national and environmental initiative.
