Large crowds gathered at the Inland Revenue Department's head office and regional offices today (02), following the implementation of a new requirement making Taxpayer Identification Numbers (TIN) mandatory for eight specified activities including opening bank accounts.

The new requirement, which came into effect on November 01, prompted many people who had not yet obtained a TIN number to visit Inland Revenue offices to complete their registration.

The sudden influx of applicants also caused significant disruptions to the department's website, as large numbers of people attempted to apply for TIN numbers online simultaneously. The website was subsequently taken offline temporarily for maintenance.

Under the new regulations, individuals are required to provide a valid TIN number when carrying out eight specified activities, including opening bank accounts, registering vehicles, renewing licences and registering businesses.

Inland Revenue Department Media Spokesperson Commissioner Nandana Kumara urged the general public to avoid unnecessary visits to the department's offices and to seek assistance from the relevant sections only when required.

He explained that obtaining a TIN has been a legal requirement for all individuals above the age of 18 since January 1, 2024.

However, he stressed that there was no need for the general public to panic or rush to obtain their TIN numbers, as the department would continue its registration process for those who do not immediately require the number for the eight specified activities.

He also advised the public to keep their TIN certificates safely and submit photocopies to relevant institutions when necessary, including when renewing revenue licences.

The Department has requested public cooperation to help manage the increased demand and minimise congestion at its offices.
