A special wildlife protection operation dubbed ‘Hasthi Sena’ was launched today (02) in Kalawewa to safeguard elephants and curb illegal activities threatening Sri Lanka’s wildlife.
The operation, conducted in the North Western Wildlife Region, was jointly organised by the Ministry of Environment, the Sri Lanka Army and the Department of Wildlife Conservation under the leadership of Environment Minister Dhammika Patabendi.
During the operation, authorities uncovered a range of illegal items, including unauthorised firearms, animal traps and ammunition. These items are believed to have the potential to be used in the killing of elephants and other wild animals.
The seized items are expected to be produced before the Kekirawa Magistrate’s Court for further legal proceedings.
The Ministry of Environment said that enforcement operations and legal action would continue against those in possession of illegal firearms and those responsible for setting up unauthorised electric fences and traps that threaten elephant populations.
Several senior officials participated in the operation, including North Western Province Wildlife Director Pushpantha Wimaladasa, Ministry of Environment Adviser Ravinda Kariyawasam and representatives of the armed forces.
A total of 60 Army personnel supported the operation, which was carried out by 10 operational teams divided into six groups.
The Ministry stated that individuals arrested and items seized during the operation would be handed over to the relevant authorities for further legal action under the Fauna and Flora Protection Ordinance.
