A total of 208 police officers have been arrested in connection with various offences, including drug-related crimes, Police Media Spokesperson Assistant Superintendent of Police F. U. Wootler has revealed.
Speaking on Ada Derana's Big Focus programme, the Police Spokesperson noted that nearly 1,500 police officers have also been suspended from service over various offences.
Acknowledging the presence of corrupt and unsuitable officers within the Police Department, he said measures were being taken to identify and remove them while ensuring strict legal action.
Meanwhile, the Police Spokesperson revealed that 11,131 children had been arrested between October 30, 2025, and to date, including 233 girls.
He further stated that police are closely monitoring suspected drug distribution activities in and around schools and private tuition classes, particularly involving crystal methamphetamine (‘Ice’).
According to him, authorities are investigating reports of narcotics being distributed through items such as Ice cream, cotton candy and ‘Sarawita’. Intelligence officers have been deployed to monitor such activities and prevent further distribution, ASP Wootler said.
The Police Media Spokesperson also urged parents to pay close attention to changes in their children's eating habits, behaviour, conversations and social circles, warning that such changes could indicate potential involvement in drug-related activities.
He reiterated that police were taking steps to address drug-related activities and misconduct within the department.
