The Department of Meteorology has issued an Amber-level weather warning for several districts across the country, cautioning the public about thundershowers accompanied by severe lightning.
The warning, issued by the Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre will remain in effect until 1.00 a.m. tomorrow (06).
According to the Met. Department, thundershowers accompanied by severe lightning are likely at several locations in the affected areas after 1.00 p.m. today.
The warning has been issued to residents of 18 districts, including Colombo, Gampaha, Galle, Kalutara, Kandy, Kegalle, Kurunegala, Matara, Hambantota, Puttalam, Ratnapura, Anuradhapura, Badulla, Mannar, Matale, Monaragala, Nuwara Eliya and Vavuniya.
The Department warned that severe lightning could pose a serious threat to people remaining outdoors, with an increased risk of injuries and fatalities. Damage to electrical and electronic equipment, disruptions to electricity and communication services, and transport-related difficulties are also possible.
Strong winds and heavy rainfall may accompany the thundershowers in some areas, potentially causing localised damage to infrastructure.
The general public has been urged to suspend outdoor sports, construction work, agricultural activities and recreational events when thunderstorms approach.
Residents have also been advised to seek shelter immediately in substantial buildings or enclosed hard-topped vehicles, while avoiding beaches, swimming areas, lakes, rivers and other water bodies.
The Met. Department further cautioned against taking shelter under isolated trees, tents, open sheds or partially enclosed structures. People should also avoid using electrical appliances and wired electrical systems during thunderstorms, the Met. Department added.
