Minister of Trade, Commerce, Food Security and Cooperative Development Wasantha Samarasinghe has stated that the government is currently drafting new legislation aimed at abolishing the manpower labour system operating in the country.
The Minister made these remarks while addressing the National Trade Union Conference held in Colombo today (07).
Addressing the gathering, the Minister further stated that the government does not approve of the practice of paying an intermediary for workers who provide their services through direct employment.
He also emphasised that the struggle, which has continued for years to secure permanent employment and protect the rights of manpower workers, would be further strengthened in the future.
