The General Secretary of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP), Attorney Sagara Kariyawasam has requested Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa to intervene in securing two urgent parliamentary debates on alleged acts of violence targeting the Buddhasasana and Buddhist monks, as well as the sudden transfers of judges.
In a letter addressed to the Opposition Leader today (08), Kariyawasam highlighted concerns over what the party described as an increase in violent and derogatory acts directed at the Buddhasasana and members of the Buddhist clergy in recent times.
The letter raises concerns regarding the State's constitutional obligation to protect and foster the Buddhasasana, the conduct of certain law enforcement authorities, and social media campaigns allegedly targeting Buddhist monks through platforms considered supportive of the incumbent government.
It also expresses concern over the sudden transfers of judges who have delivered rulings unfavourable to the present government or questioned its actions, stating that such developments have given rise to serious public concerns.
The SLPP maintains that transparent clarification of these matters is essential to safeguarding judicial independence and maintaining public confidence in the judiciary.
In view of the upcoming Budget debate and the possibility that these matters of national importance may receive insufficient parliamentary attention, the SLPP through the letter has urged the Opposition Leader to take the necessary parliamentary and political measures to secure two separate debates on the issues, either prior to or during the Budget proceedings.
