
The Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) Court in Ramanathapuram has extended till January 3 the judicial remand of 59 Sri Lankan fishermen, arrested by the Tharuvaikulam Marine police during September-November for alleged illegal fishing in Indian waters off Kanyakumari.
CJM N. Dharman extended the remand of the fishermen, presently lodged in Puzhal central prison near Chennai, using video conferencing facility on Friday, The Hindu reported.
Minister of Fisheries, Rajitha Senaratne yesterday stated that 213 Sri Lankan fishermen and 40 Lankan vessels are currently in Indian custody.
The Minister added that he will travel to India to hold talks with its Fisheries Minister to solve the issues between the two country’s fishing communities as well as to negotiate the release of the Lankan fishermen currently held by Indian authorities.
