The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) says that the rapidly increasing number of patients with kidney disease has become a grave issue in providing healthcare services and therefore urged the Health Ministry to give more emphasis to the matter.
A specific unit should be established for kidney disease and necessary measures be taken to curb it, the Spokesperson of the GMOA, Dr. Naveen de Soysa said.
He stated that the GMOA has presented a 12-step programme regarding kidney disease to President Mahinda Rajapksa.
He further stated that a proposal has been made for the National Science Foundation to launch another research on the cause of kidney disease in Sri Lanka at a cost of Rs 350 million.
The GMOA spokesman pointed out that all previous research carried out regarding kidney disease have failed to provide a proper solution and therefore requested the government to refrain from wasting another Rs 350 million of public money.
The GMOA requested the Secretary of the Finance Ministry, P.B. Jayasundara to immediately halt any study to be conducted by the National Science Foundation and instead allocate the funds to the Non Communicable Disease Unit of the Health Ministry and to bring the entire operation under its control.
