A female wild elephant was killed after being hit by the night mail train traveling towards Colombo from Trincomalee last night.
An elephant of the Kaudulla National Park was killed in the accident which had taken place in the Kithuluthuwa area in Habarana on the Trincomalee-Colombo main railway line.
Wildlife officers suspect that the elephant was crossing the railway track and returning to the national park after rampaging through a village in the area when she had come into contact with the train.
The elephant is believed to be around 30 years old, they said.
