
The first election related incident involving firearms was reported today when shots were allegedly fired at a vehicle belonging to United National Party (UNP) candidate for Hambantota District, Atula Senaratne at around 3.00 am this morning.
Senaratne has lodged a complaint with the Campaign for Free and Fair Elections (CaFFE) stating that a group had arrived in a vehicle and opened fired at his cab, 50 - 4079, which was parked outside his residence at Aranwala Road, Beliatta.
He claims that the group drove away after he switched on the lights of the residence after he heard the gun shots. Senaratne has also lodged a complaint with the police.
Senaratne, who is a close associate of UNP MP Sajith Premadasa, said that he had receiving threats on several previous occasions.
The first incident of election related violence was also reported from Hambantota, the CaFFE Media Unit said.
