Colombo District UNP Candidate Srinath Perera today accused former Provincial Minister Udaya Gammanpila of betraying his own policies, ethics and values for his new position as the District Leader of Colombo for the UPFA by violating election laws.

In an open letter to the former Minister of Agriculture and Environment in the Western Provincial Council, released to the media today, Perera stated that it was widely publicized through media that Gammanpila had launched his election campaign under the auspices of Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

“Although you brag about political ethics and adherence to election laws, you have launched your election campaign under the aegis of a government official, showing the level of your hypocrisy and duplicity,” he charged.

Perera, former Western Provincial Councilor and President’s Counsel, says that it is an offence to use state officials and state property in an election campaign under any circumstance.

The fact that Gammanpila has violated election laws in public at the very outset of his campaign disqualifies his boasting about political ethics or “new political culture,” he stressed.

The UNP candidate also poses 3 questions to Udaya Gammanpila in the open letter.
