United National Party (UNP) MPs Ajith Mannapperuma and Nalin Bandara today raised a parliamentary privileges issue over the attack incident which had taken place in Hambantota last week.

Mannapperuma and Bandara, who attended today’s parliament session wearing black scarves in protest over the incident, charged that police officers took no action while a group of thugs behaved in an inhuman manner towards them.

The two Members of Parliament (MPs) requested Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa to take necessary action regarding the incident which the team of UNP MPs had to face in Hambantota.

They also requested that the Inspector General of Police (IGP), police officers who were present at the time of the incident and the Mayor of Hambantota be called before the parliamentary privileges committee.

Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa in response stated that he would direct his attention towards the matter.
 
The Speaker of Parliament had yesterday expressed regret over the incident where a group of UNP MPs were obstructed in Tissamaharama, Hambantota the electorate of which he is the SLFP chief organizer.

Rajapaksa had stated that as opposition MPs they had every right to inspect development work in Sri Lanka and also look into the financial data.

What happened is Hambantota is unfortunate and should not happen again, he added.
