22-year-old mother dies after illegal abortion

A 22-year-old mother of two from Aluthgama in Dikoya has died following an illegal abortion carried out in the Hatton area.

The woman had visited an abortion center at Kotagala in Hatton recently and had later been admitted to the Dikoya Hospital due to a complication during the procedure.

She was later transferred to the Nawalapitiya District Hospital and was undergoing treatment in the intensive care unit (ICU) when she passed away this morning, police said.

Police said that legal action will be taken against the illegal abortion center.
