The Sri Lanka army and the navy along with the police have launched an investigation including a search in the general area of Ichchilampattai to apprehend suspects after the discovery of a T56 weapon with several rounds of ammunition in a bag at Lanka Patuna beach near a naval detachment.
According to preliminary investigations, a senior sailor from the navy camp located few hundred meters away from the incident, while jogging along the beach at around 6.30pm yesterday (5), had seen two young males carrying something wrapped in a fertilizer bag.
The sailor had approached them, due to their strange behavior with the suspicious parcel, when the two suspects escaped leaving the bag on the beach. A T56 weapon with ammunition was found in it, the defence ministry said in statement.
A joint army, navy and police investigation and search is currently underway and so far no arrests have been made, it said.
