
Police curfew has been declared in the Beruwala police area in addition Aluthgama police area with immediate effect, police spokesman SSP Ajith Rohana said.
He stated that the curfew will last until further notice.
The reason for the curfew is reportedly a clash between two groups in the Aluthgama area.
Religious tension had been escalating in the area in recent months following the torching of several Muslim-owned shops and other similar incidents.
The latest incident came when a Muslim youth allegedly manhandled a Buddhist monk and his driver on the Poson Poya Day. Police arrested three suspects over the incident.
Simmering tensions between the Buddhist groups and Muslims had escalated into clashes, according to latest reports.
Meanwhile it has been reported that train services along the southern coastal line have been delayed due to the curfew imposed in Aluthgama and Beruwala.
