Kaththankudi mass grave - excavation to commence on 18 August

The Kaluwanchikudy police have thus far recorded statements from at least 100 persons on an alleged mass grave in Batticaloa and the excavation of the site will be commenced on 18 August, a source from the Kaluwanchikudy police said.
The mass grave is said to contain the remains of 160 Muslims who were killed by the LTTE in cold blood in June 1990.
The Magistrate Court in Kaththankudi temporary postponed the excavation process, after the Kaluwanchikudy police informed the Court that they have received only one complaint, on this regard on July 1.
However, the Presidential Commission Regarding Missing Persons (PCRMP) during a public sitting held in Kaththankudi, in June had recorded statements from approximately 110 persons who are relatives of the deceased in the mass execution.
The initial court order to excavate the site was issued on June 23 following an affidavit filed at the Kaththankudi Magistrate Court by Abdul Majeed Mohammed, a person who said to have lost his loved ones in the massacre.
