Maithri signs MOU with opposition

Common Candidate Maithripala Sirisena today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the opposition political parties including the United National Party (UNP) with respect to the forthcoming Presidential election. 

 

The MOU was signed after a meeting held at the Open Air stadium of the Vihara Maha Devi Park in Colombo, this morning.

 

Politicians including former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremasinghe, Democratic Party leader Sarath Fonseka signed for the MOU under the patronage of Ven. Maduluwawe Sobhitha Thero.

 

The main aspects of the MOU are to abolish the executive Presidency, change the electoral system in Sri Lanka, and amending the 18th Amendment to the Constitution.

 

The Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) also announced that it is due to sign a MOU with the Common Candidate within this week and later they would be actively involved in Sirisena’s election campaign.
