University teachers launch token strike

University teachers launch token strike

December 9, 2014   10:11 am

University teachers will refrain from academic and administrative affairs today based on several demands, the Federation of University Teachers’ Association (FUTA) said.

FUTA Chairman Chandraguptha Thenuwara stated that the token strike will be carried out at universities across the island.

The token strike has reportedly been launched against the politicization of universities, low fund allocation for the education sector and also seeking to separately categorize the service of university lecturers.

Other issues raised by the FUTA include the enrolling of students to universities based on the letters of government politicians and the issue of University Grants Commission (UGC) officials attending foreign seminars meant for university lecturers.
