Over 550,000 people have been displaced and three people have died in the north central and eastern as torrential rains made dams overflow and hampered transport.

The Disaster Management Center (DMC) calculates over 500,000 people belonging to 155,565 families have been affected while 60, 000 people from 17,237 families have been housed in shelters.

The spill gates of several tanks including the Kalawewa, Rajanganaya, Tisawewa, Nuwarawewa, Nachchaduwa, and Mahakanadarawa tanks have been opened.

Meanwhile, the Army said more than 7000 Army personnel have now been deployed in flood-affected areas in the Wanni, Anuradhapura, Trincomalee, Polonnaruwa and Batticaloa districts for rescue and relief operations on the directions of the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake. 

Navy Spokesman Commander Kosala Warnakulasooriya said that naval troops have rescued 180 persons during their deployment on flood relief operations in the Trincomalee, Batticaloa, Polonnaruwa and Anuradhapura districts. Some 75 persons were rescued in Tabbowa, 19 persons in Pansalgodalla, 21 persons in Galenbindunuwewa, 39 persons in Rajanganaya and 26 persons in Nochchiyagama, according to hom. 

Twelve Naval teams with inflatable rescue boats (IRBs) and fiber glass dinghies (FGDs) have been dispatched for rescue assistance in liaison with respective Government officials in the affected areas.
