Low pressure area expected to move northwards

The Department of Meteorology says that the low pressure area is still located in the vicinity of East coast of Sri Lanka and is expected to move northwards, affecting the weather of the country and surrounding sea area.

 

Under the influence of the system, showers or thunder showers will occur over most parts of the country particularly in the Eastern, Northern,  North central, North–Western, Central  and Uva provinces.

 

Heavy falls (more than 100 mm) are also likely at some places while strong winds (up to 40-60 Km/hr) can be expected at times over the island and over the sea areas around the island.

 

There may be temporary localized strong winds (up to 80 Km/hr) during thundershowers, according to a severe weather advisory issued by Early Warning Centre of the Department of Meteorology.

 

Intermittent showers or thundershowers will occur in the sea areas around the island.

 

Winds will be North-Easterly and speed will be 40-50 kmph. The sea areas off the coast extending from Mannar to Galle via Kankasanthurei, Batticaloa and Pottuvil may be very rough at times and dangerous as the winds can strengthen up to 80 kmph at times.

 

The other sea areas around the island will also be rough at times.

 

Significant rainfalls reported from main meteorological stations during last 24hrs ending at 08.30 a.m. today:- 86.2 from Batticaloa,72.9mm from Vavniya,69.5mm from Anuradapura.
